FREEB: Brewing Revolution and Education A
Toast to the Pub! Hosted by the CCA Social Practice MFA program, FREEB is an event that aims to elaborate historical links between brewing education and the American Revolution, by forming an environment where individuals can imagine and propose alternatives to the present social situation. FREEB will take place in the Social Practice Studio transformed into a pub (‘public house’) where we will invite individuals to reconsider the present social and political context within a convivial atmosphere. Focusing and taking place within a school (CCA), we choose to question the current situation of our educational experience by examining alternative educational systems such as the concept of free schools/free skools as sites for engendering other possibilities through intellectual, political and economic freedom. FREEB will be comprised of a series of presentations and discussions organized around three themes. The first theme is beer. This section will feature a presentation on the history of brewing and its relation to revolutionary American politics and the 21st amendment by artists John Jota Leaños and Sean Levon Nash. This presentation will be followed by a series of informal discussions with local home and microbrewers who will share their beer and insights on their craft. The second theme is revolution. Artist Sam Gould of the group Red76 will present the relationships between printing, Benjamin Franklin, philosophy and the tavern. The evening will conclude with a conversation about education with presentations by artist, writer & curator Ted Purves (Temescal Amity Works), artist Amy Franceschini (Future Farmers) and Special Guests…with lubricated conversations to follow. Please note the bar only holds a limited number of people. In order to take part in this program you must RSVP to socialpractices@gmail.com by December 5, 2007.
